The Owl & Turtle Bookshop
A Mid-Coast Tradition Since 1970
Marine Room
When we opened our Marine Room, more than 35
years ago, nautical books were in short supply.  To
stock an entire room with titles on what was
considered at the time rather obscure subjects
(diesel engines repair, knots, navigation, wooden
boat building and naval history to name a few) was a
daunting task.  Like any good seaman we learned to
adapt.  And over the years, we built in our stock
largely on the recommendation of sailors who made
port in Camden harbor.

It was upon the advise of a yachtsman from
Bermuda that we first heard about the British author,
Patrick O'Brian.  Based on this one recommendation
we wrote to a small publisher in London and
ordered a handful of copies of a little known novel
entitled,
Master and Commander.  In doing so, we
became one of the first American bookstores to
carry Mr. O'Brian's work.  A tradition carried on for
more than 30 years.

In dedicating an entire room to nautical titles, our store has attracted many marine authors.  These
include Nathaniel Philbrick and Peter Nichols to name a few.  Sebastian Junger was signing copies
of his book,
The Perfect Storm, in our store when he received a call from his agent to inform the
author that his title had reached number one on The New York Times Bestseller list.  Linda
Greenlaw, a central character in
The Perfect Storm, has made several stops in our store for
readings and signings, and most recently for a cooking party to celebrate,
Recipes from a Very
Small Island
.

Today, just as 36 years ago, we consider our nautical selection among the nation's best.  Please call
or e-mail us with questions regarding our titles, maps and nautical charts.  It is also our pleasure to
recommend gifts for the sailor that we will gladly gift-wrap and ship to points beyond our harbor.
